Solar Panel Maintenance

What maintenance do solar panels need? Cleaning, inspections, and when to call a professional.

Solar Panels Are Low Maintenance

With no moving parts, solar panels are incredibly reliable. Most systems run for 25+ years with minimal intervention. Rainfall in the US typically keeps panels clean, and modern monitoring makes it easy to spot any issues.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule

Monthly

5 minutes
  • Check your monitoring app for any alerts or unusual drops in generation
  • Compare current output to previous months/years
  • Glance at panels from ground level to spot obvious issues

Quarterly

15 minutes
  • Review generation data trends
  • Check inverter display for error codes
  • Ensure nothing is creating new shading (tree growth, etc.)

Annually

30 minutes
  • Visual inspection of all panels for damage, discolouration, or debris
  • Check mounting brackets and fixings (if safely visible)
  • Review annual generation against expected output
  • Consider professional cleaning if panels are visibly dirty

Every 5 Years

Professional visit
  • Professional inspection and electrical testing
  • Inverter health check (especially if out of warranty)
  • Full system performance review
  • Check all electrical connections

Do Solar Panels Need Cleaning?

Usually Not Required

  • Rainfall keeps panels reasonably clean
  • Panel angle helps debris slide off
  • Light dirt has minimal impact (2-5%)
  • Risk of damage may outweigh benefits

Consider Cleaning If...

  • Panels are under trees (sap, leaves)
  • Bird droppings are visible
  • Flat or low-angle installation
  • Near construction or dusty areas

Safe Cleaning Guidelines

  • Never climb on your roof - use a professional or clean from ground with a long brush
  • Use plain water only - no detergents or chemicals that could damage coatings
  • Clean early morning or evening - not in full sun when panels are hot
  • Avoid pressure washers - too much force can damage seals and frames
  • Don't scratch - use soft brushes only, never abrasive materials

Common Issues & Solutions

Dirty Panels

Low

Symptoms: Gradual 5-10% drop in output, visible grime or bird droppings

Solution: UK rain usually handles this. Clean with water if needed, or hire professional.

Shading

Moderate

Symptoms: Lower output at certain times of day, especially from one string

Solution: Trim overhanging trees or vegetation. Check for new obstructions.

Inverter Error

Urgent

Symptoms: No generation, error codes on display, flashing lights

Solution: Try restarting inverter. If error persists, contact installer.

Physical Damage

Urgent

Symptoms: Visible cracks, chips, or broken glass on panels

Solution: Contact installer immediately. Don't touch damaged panels.

Hot Spots

Moderate

Symptoms: Visible brown/yellow discolouration on panels, reduced output

Solution: Professional inspection needed. May be covered under warranty.

Pest Infestation

Moderate

Symptoms: Birds nesting under panels, pigeons roosting, squirrel damage

Solution: Install bird deterrents or mesh guards. Professional pest removal.

Monitoring Your System

What to Look For

Daily Generation

Check your app shows generation during daylight hours. Zero generation on a sunny day is a problem.

Year-on-Year Comparison

Compare this month to the same month last year. A 10%+ drop warrants investigation.

Inverter Status

Green light = good. Amber/red lights or error codes need attention.

Panel-Level Data (if available)

With optimisers or microinverters, check all panels are performing similarly.

When to Call a Professional

Contact Your Installer Immediately If:

  • System shows zero generation for more than one day
  • Visible damage to panels, wiring, or inverter
  • Burning smell or signs of overheating
  • Persistent error codes on inverter
  • Sudden significant drop in output (30%+)
  • Water ingress or leaks near electrical components

Recommended Professional Services

Annual inspection (optional)$100 - $150
Professional cleaning$75 - $150
Electrical testing (5-yearly)$150 - $250
Inverter replacement$800 - $1,500
Bird/pest proofing$300 - $600

Remember Your Warranties

Most issues in the first 10-25 years should be covered by manufacturer warranties. Keep your NABCEP certificate and warranty documents safe. If something goes wrong, contact your installer first — they can help with warranty claims.
