What is NABCEP?
The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is the most respected certification body for solar professionals in the US. Founded in 2002, NABCEP sets the standard for solar installer qualifications through rigorous testing and continuing education requirements.
NABCEP certification is voluntary — it's not legally required to install solar panels. However, choosing a NABCEP-certified installer gives you confidence that your system will be designed and installed to the highest industry standards.
Why Choose a NABCEP-Certified Installer?
Proven Expertise
NABCEP-certified installers have passed rigorous exams and demonstrated real-world experience. They understand NEC codes, system design, and safety protocols.
Better System Performance
Certified professionals design systems that maximise generation and minimise losses. Proper design can mean 10-20% more electricity over the system's lifetime.
Tax Credit Compliance
The Federal Solar Tax Credit (30%) requires proper installation. A NABCEP-certified installer ensures your system meets all requirements for claiming the full tax credit.
Continuing Education
NABCEP professionals must complete ongoing training to maintain certification, keeping them current with the latest technologies and code changes.
NABCEP Certification Levels
NABCEP PV Installation Professional (PVIP)
The gold standard for solar installers. Requires passing a rigorous exam, documented experience, and continuing education. This is the certification most homeowners should look for.
NABCEP PV Design Specialist
Focused on system design rather than installation. These professionals create optimal system layouts, electrical designs, and ensure code compliance.
NABCEP PV Associate
Entry-level certification demonstrating foundational knowledge. Associates are working toward full professional certification and have passed the associate exam.
NABCEP PV Commissioning & Maintenance Specialist
Specialists in testing, commissioning, and maintaining solar PV systems. Important for ongoing system performance and troubleshooting.
How to Verify NABCEP Certification
You can verify any installer's NABCEP certification through the official NABCEP database:
- Visit the NABCEP Certified Professionals directory at nabcep.org
- Search by name, company, or location
- Check the certification type (PVIP is the most relevant for homeowners) and expiry date
- Confirm the certification is current — expired certifications mean the professional hasn't met continuing education requirements
Important: While NABCEP certification is a strong indicator of quality, also verify that your installer holds the required state contractor's license and adequate insurance coverage.
Certification Requirements
Education Requirements
Candidates must complete approved training courses covering PV system design, installation, safety, and the National Electrical Code (NEC).
Documented Experience
PVIP candidates need a minimum of 58 hours of advanced PV training and documented experience installing or designing solar systems.
Pass the Exam
A comprehensive, proctored exam covering system design, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and safety. The pass rate is approximately 70%.
Continuing Education
Certified professionals must complete 18 hours of continuing education every 3 years to maintain their certification.
